2008 Transplant Nurses Day Essay Contest

As appreciation of this important day grows, ITNS has created increasing opportunities for nurses to celebrate their contributions. This year we are pleased to announce an exciting option for patients to personally participate in the Transplant Nurses Day festivities. The First Annual Transplant Nurses Day Essay Contest will allow patients to nominate an ITNS transplant nurse who has made a difference in their lives. The winning essay will be featured in a future issue of the quarterly ITNS Newsletter reaching 1,500 readers in 23 countries around the world. In addition, the nominated ITNS nurse receives a $100 cash prize and $100 to apply toward ITNS events or store merchandise.

Our second annual Transplant Nurses Day was celebrated far and wide April 18th, 2007. ITNS sent out 115 celebration packets including banners, balloons, and stickers. Here are just some examples of celebration.

  • Johns Hopkins Hospital had a Nurses Day program that included their VP of Nursing, a Transplant Recipient/Transplant Nurse, and a great motivational talk by Jessica Melore. Lunch was provided. All of the transplant nurses received a specially made pin.
  • Toronto General Hospital had a pizza lunch. Their physician team joined in the celebration, recognizing all the nurses’ hard work and dedication.
  • Duke University Hospital transplant nurse coordinators received flowers from their administrator. Also, cakes were delivered to each organ office. Lunch was provided by the abdominal surgeons. Individual organ teams celebrated on the transplant floors.
  • Methodist University Transplant Institute’s celebration was supported by Administration. Cookies and drinks were provided.
  • Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver celebrated with a pizza lunch for the units and stickers and posters around the facility. The faculty gave each staff nurse a thank you card. They also sent out a press release through the faculty newsletter.
  • University of North Carolina Hospitals held an educational dinner, decorated with ITNS celebration packet materials. Attendees also received gift cards for either Starbucks or Cold Stone Creamery.
  • The Heart of Ohio chapter held their quarterly meeting. Both the meeting and the nursing unit were decorated. An article was submitted for the Ohio State University Medical Center web site about the celebration.
  • The University of Colorado Hospital had a meal for both day shift and night shift. The clinics and unit displayed the Transplant Nurses Day stickers, balloons, and posters. Their hospital newsletter wrote an article and published a photo.
  • Mayo Clinic in Rochester had their Mayor attend Transplant Grand Rounds. He also declared it Transplant Nurses Day for the city.
  • Oregon Health & Science University celebrated with a special cake for the coordinators and inpatient unit. Thank you’s were sent to each coordinator by the Transplant Administrator and the Director of the Kidney Transplant Program.
  • The Heart and Lung Transplant Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center celebrated with a luncheon and cake. The celebration included the Coordinators, NPs, and MDs. Posters were displayed throughout the office and every nurse had a balloon tied to the back of their chair.
  • The VCI Health System in Virginia celebrated on their transplant unit. They held a potluck luncheon were all nurses received stickers and gifts. They sponsored a display in the hospital lobby for a week celebrating “Transplant Nurses throughout the continuum” which captured the community, clinic, operating room, and inpatient nurses.
  • Children’s Hospital & Regional Medical Center in Seattle created a special “Reward and Recognition Spotlight Flyer” thanking all their transplant nurses.
